In 1970, through his site specific work, became a team member of emerging community-arts organisation Interplay, working on the streets of Leeds.
During this time, developed educational musical games, which have since become a standard feature of participatory music workshops.


The games are descibed in the booklets Sounds Fun and Sounds Fun 2. They booklets have also been translated and published in Japanese.



He has pioneered new workshop techniques, working with Contemporary Music For Amateurs (COMA), the Firebird Trust, the London Sinfonietta education department, and Sonic Arts Network, running participatory multimedia projects in the UK, Scandinavia and Japan. A good example is the project Spanner, devised in the 1970s and most recently run with COMA.

The community-school based event The Wicked Wizard of Whitworth (1972) (published in Sun - Creativity and Environment) was one of the first community-based site-specific events in the UK. An introduction to all of this work, in Japanese, can be found in the book More than Music by Yu Wakao.
